When Margaret Ryder, the hearing daughter of deaf parents, grows up during the Great Depression, she alone is the link between Mama and Papa’s silent world and the hearing world they do not fully understand…and it does not understand them. Her youth is spent sacrificing friendships and romance as she struggles to keep her parents’ deafness a secret from everyone who knows her. Torn between the responsibility she feels for her parents and her own desire for independence, Margaret quietly hides her growing resentment. When she falls in love and secretly marries a young soldier, Margaret finally breaks free, shattering her now tenuous relationship with her parents. Eventually Margaret and her parents realize that their love as a family is stronger than the differences that have separated them. A compelling vision of how courage, communication and understanding can reunite a family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by CODA Love is Never Silent
I remember seeing this movie when it first came out, watched it with my parents, both of which are deaf, and my hearing brother. The time setting was different, as the city, but couldn't believe how much I felt like this was my life being the first born, and a daughter of deaf parents. My brothers only complaint was his character died young, but the story is absolutely wonderful. I am so glad it is finally available to buy, and enjoy again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Helpful Elf Finally Found It!
It is because of this movie that I went back to school to learn ASL. Always wanted to be able to communicate with the deaf and have since started interpreting in the deal community. I remember the first time I ever saw this on TV and was so moved by it I had to get it. Later I brought it to the class for all to see. I lent my original copy to a fellow classmate and never got it back. I am so excited to finally find it again and can't wait to pick it up.
