Celebrated each year on May 6, Nurses Day honors and acknowledges the service, compassion and commitment nurses provide to people in need of care every day. Seminars are held to promote and advocate the health and safety of nurses and their patients. Local governments make official proclamations to honor the work of nurses in their communities. Coworkers, family members, patients and friends give nurses they know flowers, gifts and cards. Nurses Day begins a weeklong celebration that culminates on the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Considered the founder of modern nursing because of her pioneering work in the 19th century, Miss Nightingale is also remembered and honored on this special day for nurses.
